Keeping a Large Device Fleet Clean with Intune

Automated device cleanup, standard naming, app packaging, and configuration across a distributed multi-office fleet using Intune proactive remediations.

The business problem

A distributed company with many offices had Windows laptops of mixed models bought independently by regional teams. Computers arrived with unwanted software, were named inconsistently, and drifted from their intended configuration over time. Fixing issues one device at a time did not scale, and every hardware variation added troubleshooting paths and training burden.

Standardizing the hardware and the names

Business-class laptops from a single manufacturer became the supported standard, replacing the pattern of buying unrelated consumer models. A common hardware class makes imaging, driver and BIOS management, warranty support, and lifecycle planning repeatable.

Computer names follow a standard derived from each device’s serial number and its division. Scripts apply the name automatically, so devices identify themselves consistently from enrollment onward.

Remediation that runs by itself

Built a library of Intune proactive remediations, each a detection script paired with a remediation script and logging. They check for conditions such as outdated manufacturer tools, unwanted bundled software, conflicting legacy agents, and settings that have drifted, and then fix them without a technician touching the device. Reboot warnings keep users informed when a fix needs one.

Supporting automation covers application packaging for Intune deployment, batch removal of legacy security agents, update runners for common applications, and managed browser configuration with per-division policy templates.

Maintained like software

The scripts live in version control, with consistent detection, remediation, and logging patterns, so changes are reviewable and the library can grow without turning into a pile of one-offs.

The result

New and existing devices converge on the same clean, standard state with little hands-on effort. Troubleshooting is simpler because there are fewer hardware variations, naming follows a rule, and removed software stays removed. The library gives IT a repeatable way to handle the next fleet-wide problem without starting from scratch.
